The Spanish Guardia Civil began operations with its Airbus Military CN-235 VIGMA (vigilancia maritima, maritime surveillance) aircraft manned by its own crews on October 1. Up to then the two aircraft were flown from Getafe AB by mixed crews of both Guardia Civil and Ejercito del Aire (Spanish Air Force) personnel. The air force already has qualified, fully-integrated tactical system (FITS) operators for its own fleet of VIGMAs, and the mixed arrangement allowed operations to be undertaken while the Guardia Civil qualified its pilots and crews on the new equipment.
