That most enigmatic and eccentric of Englishmen, T. E. Lawrence, more popularly known as "Lawrence of Arabia," has risen in the military psyche from obscure young archaeologist to key thinker and writer; indeed, in his day, he was one of the most successful practical leaders of what has become the widespread modern phenomenon of insurgent warfare. His leadership of the uprising by Arab tribes of the Hejaz against their Ottoman overlords has been widely studied by military minds as diverse as Mao Tse-tung and John Boyd.
