Two new fuels are in the running to replace the leaded gasoline that 167,000 private airplanes in the United States depend on, according to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association. The Federal Aviation Administration began searching for replacements in 2013. Private pilots worry that if new fuels require engine overhauls, some pilots will just give up flying, leading to a loss of aviation jobs ("The Fight Over Avgas," Aug. 2013). The FAA began by testing unleaded fuels for engine compatibility, cost, and environmental impact, and will now start full-scale engine testing on two versions developed by Shell and Swift Fuels.
