In a september test flight of the Masten company's sub-orbital launcher Xaero, the ver-tical-takeoff-and-landing vehicle climbed to 3,000 feet, then crashed during the landing phase ("The Mojave Launch Lab," April/May 2011). Xaero began oscillating, with the engine firing in attempts to regain stability. After controllers activated the flight termination system and shut down the liguid-oxygen engine, the 1,000-pound vehicle hit the ground in a fireball.
