A CADRE OF AVIATION history devotees are up in arms over plans to turn Germany's Tempelhof Airport into an amusement and recreation park ("The Village of Tempelhof," Above & Beyond, Oct./Nov. 2008). "Even having this idea of a park is absolutely disrespectful and a slap in the face of all Berlin Airlift veterans," says protest leader Claudia Jaekel. "It is not a playground and should not be used for picnics." The group's petition, Return Airport Berlin Tempelhof to the Pioneers of Aviation, has garnered just over 1,000 signatures; Jaekel hopes for 10,000. She suggests building a "training center for kids and meeting place for young and old pilots, engineers, scientists," and aerospace enthusiasts, rather than residences, business parks, a medical center, a library, and areas for skateboarders, climbers, and kite fliers.
