For my 75th birthday, my granddaughter gave me a deck of playing cards, each card showing three silhouettes of a World War Ⅱ airplane, the type used by the armed forces for aircraft recognition. At once I was back on Oahu, where I was 13 and in the eighth grade when Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. For at least a month or two, all schools on the island were closed for fear of further attacks, especially bombing raids. Before the schools reopened, deep trenches were dug in the red volcanic earth of the schoolyards, and we were instructed to run to them for protection in case of an attack.
