It was daybreak on a February morning in 1984, and I remember walking across the apron at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Sunlight was just spreading across bone-white Dryden Lake bed to the east. In the pallid light, the Northrop F-20 Tigershark was almost invisible. My heart started thumping as I moved around the afterburner nozzle and walked toward the fighter's nose. This was a prototype aircraft that could fly at Mach 2. Was I really going to get to fly it?
