Dave Larsen had used his ham radio for talking to friends in faraway places for years when one night he and a buddy decided to reach a little farther. They had heard that by tuning to a frequency of 145 megahertz with a few hundred dollars' worth of equipment—transmitter, receiver, antenna—they could contact the space shuttle. But what they heard over the airwaves that evening in 1991 was a voice speaking in Russian.
