What looks like a stitching pattern from the 1980s (Figure 1) is in reality an image of thousands of flight movements above Germany. With more than three million such flight movements per year, Germany is the country with the most air traffic in Europe. There's hardly any other control area as sensitive as air traffic control. For this task, the Tower North in Frankfurt relies on people - because for this task, people can't be replaced by technology. Technology runs in the background supporting the air traffic controllers in their responsible work - technology such as that developed by German KVM (keyboard, video and mouse) manufacturer Guntermann & Drunck (G&D).
