The news that airline fatalities fell to their second-lowest level on record in 2008 is indeed gratifying and is a far cry from the dark days of 1996, when the industry predicted that if corrective action wasn't taken there would be a "serious" accident every week. According to UK-based consultancy and information service provider Ascend, there were 539 reported passenger and crew fatalities last year, down from 730 in 2007. The company said that only 2004 had fewer fatalities at 434. Disturbingly, however, 2008 did see an increase in the number of fatal accidents, to 28 from 24 in 2007, which translated into a fatal accident rate of 1 per 1.3 million departures, while the rate per departure for jets is 0.7 per 1.3 million, according to Boeing.
