The airline industry made strong progress last year towards a greener future. Maintaining momentum during a downturn won't be easy, but it is the right decision. The incoming administration of President Barack Obama is committed to a more activist stance on the environment, supported by Congress. New requirements capping greenhouse gas emissions could be coming to the US, while the European Parliament has pushed aside objections and approved bringing aviation under its emissions trading scheme in three years.
