US National Transportation Safety Board public hearings into the Feb. 12 Colgan Air Q400 crash held over three days last month have brought renewed attention to issues that have long dogged the US regional airline industry: Crew training and experience levels, pay and work conditions and pilot fatigue. Although icing was initially suspected in the accident that killed 50 people, the investigation revealed that Capt. Marvin Renslow responded incorrectly to a stall prevention device and inadvertently sent the aircraft into a fatal dive after the stick pusher activated. Renslow had not received cockpit or simulator training concerning the stick pusher.
