China Eastern Airlines in mid-July finalized a deal to acquire Shanghai Airlines for CNY9 billion ($1.32 billion). Neither is profitable, but the acquisition will boost CEA's market share in Shanghai to around 50% from 35% and cost and revenue synergies are expected. China Eastern lost CNY15.3 billion in 2008 while SAL spilled CNY1.24 billion.rnPurchase will be conducted through a share swap of 1.3 CEA shares for each SAL share.
