Republic Airways Holdings, the second largest regional airline operator in the US, reluctantly opted for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2016. US major airlines are enjoying a golden era of consistent and high profitability. But the contracted regional carriers operating much of the majors' domestic networks-nearly 50% of US domestic capacity-have not seen the rewards flow down. There are a number of issues hindering regionals in the US: A growing pilot shortage; too many aging 50-seat jets remain in regional fleets and aircraft of that size are falling out of favor with the majors; and capacity purchase agreements with the majors limit regionals' operational freedom and are too often reflective of an earlier era in the US airline business.
