The Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphone was widely banned from air transport after the devices were deemed an unacceptable fire risk to aircraft by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) and airlines around the world. DOT issued an emergency order Oct. 14 banning Note7s from being transported by air in the US—either by passengers or as air cargo. All US carriers had to follow the ban and carriers from around the world quickly followed with bans or highly restrictive rules, such as not allowing the device to be turned on or charged during flight.
