The Airbus A350 XWB, the first of which was delivered to Qatar Airways in January, looks likely to be the last all-new aircraft debuted by Airbus or Boeing for perhaps a decade or longer. Instead of developing new aircraft, the two major aircraft manufacturers will now turn their attention to putting re-engined versions of already existing aircraft types into the market. As a consequence, the primary focus of commercial aircraft manufacturing over the next several years will be on new, fuel- and emissions-efficient engines rather than airframes.
