Collusion, especially among competing airlines in the world's largest commercial air transport market, is a serious charge. One of the strange aspects, therefore, of the US Department of Justice's (DOJ) confirmation that it is investigating "possible unlawful coordination" by major US carriers on capacity planning is that no evidence whatsoever has been put forward to explain why such an investigation is warranted. The four largest US carriers, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, each have received letters from DOJ requesting information and each says it will fully comply with the requests (see news story, page 9).
