North Africa-based Air Algerie committed to eight Boeing 737-800s Jan. 6 and placed firm orders for three ATR 72-600s, valued at a total of $798.1 million at current list prices. The two deals form part of Air Algerie's fleet overhaul under its 2012-17 strategic plan, which aims to increase its competitiveness against Gulf rivals Qatar Airways and Emirates Airline. Air Algerie CEO Mohamed Salah Boultif said the 737-800 "continues to be the backbone of Air Algerie's fleet... We anticipate receiving all eight of these new units before the end of 2016."
