With growing talk of a looming pilot shortage in the US-par- ticularly at the regional airline level-flight deck crew at regional carriers feel they have leverage, leading them to reject new labor deals negotiated by union leadership. But the pilots are talcing a big gamble. Instead of forcing management to offer better deals, the pilots' rejection of new contracts may just lead executives at US regional airlines to conclude they have no choice but to downsize. In late March and early April, large majorities of rank-and-file pilots at two of the US' leading regional airlines voted down tentative labor agreements. But it's not clear whether airline management is willing-or even able-to negotiate new and better deals. First came a resounding "no" vote from pilots at American Eagle, the wholly owned regional affiliate of American Airlines. American had wanted to place new Embraer E-175s it has on order with Eagle, which is in the process of rebranding as "Envoy."
