Chroniclers of the air transportation industry last year were cautiously optimistic that an economic recovery in the airline business hac arrived finally as large orders for new commercial aircraft from airlines and lessors rolled in. Order for new equipment continued this year at a brisk pace but there is a debate within the industry about too mani planes chasing too little traffic. "An awful lot of narrowbody orders are on the books and they keep coming in the door at historically high rates," said Ron Jaworowski, senior aerospace analyst at Forecast International. "The order intake seems to be outpacing predicted air traffic growth." What's happening? "There seems to be a lot of double counting going on," said Steve Fortune, founder of Fortune Aviation, a commercial aircraft trading and leasing firm. "There is not enough demand to sop up all these airplanes," he added. Look at the monthly aircraft production schedules for Airbus and Boeing. Together, they produce around 100 new airplanes per month. "It is a staggering number," Fortune said.
