The majority of engine, airframe and component maintenance is now outsourced. Major questions remain about how much these outsourced shares will grow, which firms will get the business and under what sort of contracts. But the bulk of the heavy work is going outside. What about activities much closer to the core of an airlines business, engineering and line maintenance? Here too, outsourcing has been growing, but not as dramatically. But placing some of these functions outside could have important implications. Engineering is a very small slice of maintenance spending. Outsourcing part of engineering could help small carriers compete and help spread best-practice methods even to major airlines. Line maintenance is a bigger chunk of spending and has usually been outsourced only when local scale is inadequate for in-house work. But here, too, outsourcing might expand best practices. A recent survey by the Cavok division of Oliver Wyman found very little change in outsourcing of the physical work of maintenance. The survey did find a small increase in outsourcing of engineering services, according to Wyman Partner Chris Spafford.
