Some 76% of global airline passengers are now carrying smart phones-up from just 28% in 2010-well more than doubling smart phone penetration among the worlds general population. That three out of four air travelers is a smart phone user gives the world's airlines a significant opportunity to utilize the technology to generate revenue from-and strengthen their connection with-passengers, according to SITA SITA, an IT business solutions and communications services provider to the air transport industry, exclusively briefed ATW on the results of its eighth annual Passenger IT Trends Survey. This year's survey particularly focused on passengers' attitudes regarding smart phones and whether they are using the devices to interact with airlines and, if not, whether they would be interested in doing so in the future. The 2013 survey was conducted during the spring at six airports: Atlanta (ATL), Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU), Mumbai (BOM), Frankfurt (FRA), Beijing (PEK) and Abu Dhabi (AUH).
