Pratt & Whitney and Rolls-Royce, former partners in the International Aero Engines (IAE) joint venture (JV), pulled out of plans to form a new JV that would have developed engines for future narrowbody aircraft. Pratt last year bought out Rolls-Royce's shares in the IAE JV that produces V2500 engines for Airbus A320s. The companies said they would, however, form a new collaboration to develop engines for future mid-size aircraft in the 120-130 seat range. Speaking Sept. 19 at the Aero Club of Washington, Pratt president David Hess did not directly address the abandoned JV with Rolls, but he did express concern about reduced US government funding for aeronautics research and development. Hess pointed to huge strides in aircraft engine efficiency made over the last 30 years, noting that government investments in high-level research helped spur advances in propulsion technology.
