In 1995, Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air became the first US airlines to book flights and sell tickets via the Internet. Nine years later, consumer appetite for faster, more "instant" real-time media was met with the arrival of Facebook, and soon after, with Twitter. Love or hate them, social media sites have become the Internet go-to tools. According to a Nielsen report released in September 2011, social networks and blogs account for nearly a quarter of Americans' total time spent on the Internet -more than twice the amount of time spent in the runner-up category, online games. Across 10 major global markets, social networks and blogs reach over three-quarters of active Internet users.
