While 25% of the very large aircraft contains composites, the cracks found in the wings of the Airbus A380 have nothing to do with the non-metal material. The cracks are found inside the wing on L-shaped brackets or "wing rib feet" that join the wing skins to the wing ribs. The wing rib feet-2,000 on each wing-are made of aluminum, and are not main load bearing structures, Airbus said. (The upper fuselage skin panels on the A380 fuselage are made up of Fiber Metal Laminate known as GLARE-glass laminate aluminum reinforced epoxy-comprised of several layers of thin aluminum interspersed with layers of glass fiber.)
