IATA's World Cargo Symposium in mid-March in Kuala Lumpur illustrated the new collaborative approach the trade organization is taking to deal with the challenges confronting the industry. These range from basic and sometimes stark economics to the ongoing grind of security and safety regulations and concerns. This is something that comes from the top, as DG CEO Tony Tyler said in his speech. "I am making it a priority for IATA to work even more closely with our industry partners," Tyler said. "One clear example is the need to modernize the cargo agency program. I have tasked Des Vertannes [IATA's global head of cargo] and his team to collaborate with the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) to bring forward proposals that I can present to the IATA board of governors at year-end."
