Typically, full-service carriers focus their passenger com-fort improvements on their premium cabins. Air New Zealand, always happy to buck industry trends, found a way to enhance its main cabin-and then to make an innovative product even better. Air New Zealand introduced the Economy Skycouch in 2011. A patented design, Skycouch allows a row of three economy seats to convert into a flat, flexible surface for rest, relaxation and play. It has revolutionized long-haul travel in the economy cabin. Now, parents and guardians traveling with little ones can enjoy even greater freedom to choose how they fly with the airline. Air New Zealand flies many long-haul routes, often through the night and where clear air turbulence can be unpredictable. As a highly safety-conscious airline, it decided to develop a turbulence management device that could be used in conjunction with the Skycouch. With the development of low-maintenance and flame-resistant materials, Air New Zealand was able to design a turbulence management device and infant pod that would increase passenger comfort, safety and overall experience without unnecessary financial burdens.
