Back in the days when "propeller" was not yet a dirty word and we still called regional airlines "commuters," the de Havilland DHC-6 Twin Otter and Embraer Bandeirante were mainstays of the commuter airline fleet. Changes in US FAA regulations and the arrival of the first regional jets brought an end to the era of the 18/30-seat turboprop in North America and elsewhere, although both types continue to do yeoman's work around the world. The Bandeirante recently marked the 40th birthday of its first flight and Embraer celebrated with a restoration of the second prototype (right photo). The aircraft originally belonged to the Brazilian Air Force and now joins the collection of the Santos Dumont Foundation in the city of Cotia in Sao Paulo. Restoration took about a month and was done at Embraer headquarters by current and former employees, many of whom had worked on the program in the 1970s. Of the 498 Bandeirantes built over a 20-year production life, more than 300 continue to serve in civil and military roles.
