To goanyplace from south bend by commercial transportation, head for the airport. South Bend Regional is the terminal for nine Regional airlines, three bus companies and the South Shore Railroad. South Bend, located in north central Indiana, is the only multimodal terminal in the US, according to Executive Director John Shalliol. Together, the planes, trains and buses serve a little more than 1 million passengers a year— 800,000 by air, 220,000 by train and 19,000 by bus in 2005. Although there is very little scheduled intermodal transfer, having the trains and buses available is an enormous help to airline managers coping with off-schedule operations, diversions and unexpected loads.
