As COVID-19 vaccines roll out, digital health credentials are being seen as key to restarting the engine of the airline industry and keeping it running. Technology companies are developing apps that will verify a passenger's health status relative to transmissible disease by integrating COVID-19 test results and, in the future, vaccination status. Such apps could restore public confidence in air travel, reopen borders without quarantines and permit the restoration of mass traveling. One such project is CommonPass, a health passport app developed by Geneva-based nonprofit Commons Project Foundation. The Commons Project has partnered with the World Economic Forum to develop CommonPass and the Common Trust Framework to document passengers' COVID-19 status to satisfy country entry requirements, while protecting their health data privacy.
