THE COVID-19 CRISIS HAS RAISED significant questions for us at Brussels Airport. How do we get traffic back? How do we get liquidity back? And what is the right way to support airlines? For the first two or three weeks we as a team stayed very quiet as the airlines had other priorities. But now that the situation is clearer, we have come out of hibernation. We have reestablished the contacts with airlines; it's the existing partnership that is important. We took some initial measures to support them. Firstly, it was about incentive schemes. In March, when traffic fell away, a lot of incentives built up by the airlines simply evaporated. We decided to ignore that month and although the traffic was lost, we ensured that the incentives built up over the past 11 months were intact. That was appreciated a lot by the airlines, and about 40 were able to take advantage of this. We also extended our payment terms. Finally, we started work on a plan to revive leisure traffic, but we don't know yet when Belgians will be allowed to travel, and which other countries will open their borders. What will the EU do to open borders? Will Thailand or the US open? Nobody knows. Airlines still have their systems open, just testing the market to see if bookings are coming in, and it's still marginal.
