On May 2020, global air service capacity dropped to around 146 million scheduled departure seats for the month, down from 488 million in May 2019 and the lowest level for well over a decade. Although global capacity has started to rebound, reaching 340 million scheduled seats in September, passenger numbers are not in line, resulting in substantially lower load factors and yields. This presents huge challenges for profitability and business survival, but there are'examples of how collaboration will be the cornerstone of the rebuild. Before 2020, the route development industry was not without its challenges, including how to minimize the environmental impact of air transport, address high government taxation and visa fees, and compensate for a lack of collaboration between stakeholders.
