Finnair President and CEO Keijo Suila doesn't sugarcoat the bad news. Speaking to ATW in January, he was candid that the airline's 2003 results, set to be released in late February, would be "lousy" and show "a miserable year profitwise." Passenger volume declined 3.5% to 6.8 million last year while RPKs edged up 1.1% to 13 billion against a 4.4% rise in capacity to 18.6 billion ASKs. Major expansion in Asia ran head-on into SARS, contributing to significant excess capacity, and load factor on Asia services plunged 7.5 points while system load factor dipped 2.3 points.
