One of the most reliable ways to chart a path to success is to survey the terrain, watch out for pitfalls along the way and follow in the footsteps of others who have made the journey successfully. In a nutshell, that describes the approach taken by Air Nostrum founder and CEO Carlos Bertomeu when he set out to establish Spain's first private Regional airline company more than a decade ago. "I studied more than 70 Regional airlines," he tells ATW. "I think we saw a lot of things we liked and a lot of problems we tried to solve for Air Nostrum. We tried to copy the best of each." Last year Air Nostrum, a franchise partner of Iberia Airlines, carried 3.5 million passengers on a scheduled network of 87 domestic and international routes encompassing 47 destinations. The three-airplane fleet with which it started has grown to 51 turboprops and CRJs operating some 2,200 daily flights and it is looking at larger aircraft to expand the business over the next several years. In 2002, the last year for which financial results are available, profit after tax totaled EUD48.8 million ($59 million) on sales of EUD417.5 million. It employs about 1,600.
