Air Gabon, regarded as a financial basket case for most of its quarter- century of existence, well may be on its way back to financial solvency following the government's decision to hire a team of outside experts to aid in restructuring the carrier. Under a contract with Lufthansa Consulting that came into force in 2001, the Gabon government has permitted Lufthansa personnel to take executive-level positions under DG Jean-Marie Maguena. Hanns Marien-feld is deputy DG-operations and technical and Maria-Angelike Hanne is deputy DG-finance and commercial. As part of its decision, the government also took drastic financial measures, buying Air France's 20% shareholding, absorbing 90% of Air Gabon's debt and providing it with new capital of $46.8 million. This was no problem as the country is one of the richest in Africa owing largely to revenue from oil.
