Airports often are named for the famous and those who belong to the ages: Think of Rome Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci), New York John F. Kennedy or Liverpool John Lennon. Bordeaux's new low-cost terminal "billi" makes no such pretensions. "No, no," Development Director Jean-Luc Poiroux laughs, conceding, "Indeed it is a strange name for a terminal. We wanted something new, different and special. We wanted to find a name that is easy to remember and pronounce by all European nationalities and that reflects the nature of the terminal: Simple and straightforward. Initially the name was Bill but our branding consultant in Paris advised Billi, which is a nice nickname and is non-arrogant. After all, this is a low-cost terminal in the strictest sense of the concept." An additional plus, he notes, is that the word "billi" is easily associated with "cheap" by Germans and Scandinavians. The board of the airport supported Bordeaux illico (French for "straight away") as a baseline.
