R. E. G. "Ron" Davies, one of the airline industry's fore most economic researchers and historians, died at the age of 90 on July 30. Ron began his career in the late 1940s in Britain's Ministry of Civil Aviation. He subsequently worked as a fleet planner for British Airways predecessor British European Airways, and as a market researcher for the Bristol and de Havilland aircraft companies (now part of British Aerospace) and McDonnell Douglas. Ron founded the aerospace industry's first market research department while at Bristol Aircraft in the mid-1950s. During his career, he pioneered methods of forecast ing future demand and fleet mix that are still in use. He was also unafraid to challenge the airline industry's accepted wisdom, most notably in the 1960s, when he correctly predicted there would be a need for fewer than fifty supersonic transports, at a time when most others were expecting hundreds, if not thousands, of SSTs would be in service by the 1980s.
