Change is in the air. One trend is densification, adding extra seats on aircraft by tweaking the space allocated to monuments and equipment storage. Another is the increasing range of narrowbody aircraft. Put the two together and there are a number of issues. Passengers stuck in high density seating for extended periods of time need to be kept amused and to be able to move around - will the days of DVT return? - so door areas and galleys could be converted into social areas in flight but some regulatory authorities may have to rethink their current restrictions. On the other hand, there are new opportunities at the front of the aircraft. Premium cabins will see the introduction of widebody seats to ensure seamless travel for business travellers. These long range narrowbodies could well be replacements for older aircraft-Air Astana in Kazakhstan will be swapping its Boeing 757-200s for Airbus A321LRs, for example.
