The 7E7 interior will be an interior the likes of which we have never seen before, according to Boeing. But regardless of what it will look like, Klaus Brauer, interiors specialist for the 7E7 programme at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, says that the economics are critical. "There are many ways to make passengers happy," says Brauer. "You make passengers happy not because you are nice but because you want them to come back. The way to make people happy that we think of first is to have pitch. We all know what happens to operating costs per seat when you increase space. So our goal has been to find out what are the other ways to make passengers happy which do not have such a dramatic impact on operating costs per seat." One of these wish-factors is the "empty seat scenario" that allows the passenger that much more space. This is why the 777 has moved towards 3-3-3, nine-abreast seating. With triple seats, each empty seat makes two people happy, whereas when there is an empty seat in a double seat, only one person wins. "It is not at all intuitive," says Brauer. "Once we understood that we realized that just by rearranging chairs we could make people perceive that they had more space."
