The PW4000 is a third-generation high bypass turbofan engine that replaced the JT9D-7R4. In competition with GE's CF6-80C2 and Rolls-Royce's RB211-524G/H, the PW4000 series has been used to power most types of widebody airliner since the 1980s. It is available in varying fan sizes (94, 100, and 112 inches) according to thrust. The 94-inch fan version covers the engines up to a take-off thrust of 62,000 pounds. The last two digits of the designations used on the PW4000 series indicate take-off thrust to the nearest thousand pounds while the second digit denotes the application (Boeing, Airbus or McDonnell-Douglas - o, 1 or 4).
