The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt;which goes by the acronym DLR) has developed a Low Noise Augmentation System(LNAS) to support pilots as they perform the complex procedures required forlow-noise approaches into airports.The system uses a display in the cockpit to shows pilots exactly what actionneeds to be performed – and when – in order to minimize noise on approach.From Sept. 9-13, DLR tested the system on board its A320 Advanced TechnologyResearch Aircraft (ATRA) during approaches to Zurich Airport. It is doing soas part of a joint research project with the Swiss SkyLab Foundation and the SwissFederal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa).
