A new Airport Cooperative Research Program report issued by the Transportation Research Board provides a comprehensive, systematic method for assessing an airport's influence on the quality of life of neighboring communities. "Compared to studies limited to discrete impacts (e.g., economic and noise studies), a quality of life assessment provides a more holistic view of the positive and negative impacts resulting from an airport and its activities," TRB Staff Officer Joseph Navarrete explained in a Foreword to the report. ACRP Research Report 221: Measuring Quality of Life in Communities Surrounding Airports will be of particular interest to industry practitioners who wish to better understand their airports' impacts on quality of life, take advantage of new tools to interact and build trust with communities, and enhance their planning and support of their airports' long-term goals, according to Foreword. It continues: "Quality of life is a broad and multidimensional concept that usually includes an individual's perception of his or her position in life and encompasses positive and negative aspects. It includes objective factors – such as health, work status, and living conditions – and the subjective perceptions one may have of these factors icy was never technically or logically particularly sound and they leave the reader with no doubt that whatever policy underpinning – however weak – that once existed is fifty or more years out of date. They accurately observe that policy decisions based upon 1970's technological conclusions, regardless of their validity at the time, are certainly inappropriate in the 2020s.
