House Quiet Skies Caucus leaders applauded FAA Administrator Steve Dickson for his commitment to review FAA’s controversial DNL noise metric as part of a review of the agency’s outdated aircraft noise policy slated to begin this summer. Caucus leaders called FAA’s pledge to review DNL a “victory” for the Caucus and a “step in the right direction.” The DNL metric, developed in the 1970s, has long been criticized by communities as inadequate to assess the impact of aircraft noise on them because it is not sensitive to increasing numbers of aircraft operations, especially those in the last decade enabled by NextGen flight procedures and technologies that concentrate NextGen flight paths and noise over communities.
