Neighborhood characteristics – including exposure to aircraft noise – influence our perception of our ability to shape our own life circumstances and attain desired outcomes. That is the conclusion a team of researchers at the German Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR), part of the Max Planck Society, reached through combined analysis of survey and geo-referenced data. Older people who live in areas with many unemployed individuals are more likely to feel like they are at the mercy of fate compared to others. One explanation for this is that the particular area where individuals live affect how they rate the opportunities they have to shape their own lives, the Institute explained in a news release about its study. It continues: Objective characteristics of the neighborhood, such as proximity to a hospital, aircraft noise, or unemployment, are related to the subjective feeling of having control over one's own life. This demonstrates that where people live really does make a difference on their own outlook on life.
