On June 14, GE Aviation and the French multi-national aerospace and defense company Safran launched an engine technology development program targeting more than a 20 percent drop in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to today's engines. The heart of the program will be development of open fan aircraft engines. While noise was initially a problem when this type of engine, which has no cowling to enclose the propeller, began to be developed decades ago, Safran says continuous fine tuning of the design has resulted in noise no longer being an issue.
