The Airports Commission's work remains a big challenge. Whatever its final recommendations in 2015, it will be impossible to reconcile the different views of national politicians, local politicians, airlines, airports, environmental campaigners and NIMBY-ism ('not in my backyard'). There is no guarantee that whatever party, or combination of parties, is in power after the 2015 election it or they will adopt the Airports Commission's final recommendation, but, the need for additional capacity has never been greater. The debate is often framed as if government can dictate where airlines fly, but ultimately, it is the airlines who will decide which airports they serve. Faced with high fuel prices and in many cases, difficult market conditions, airlines have to put their aircraft where the money is. Aircraft are truly mobile assets - they do not have to come to the UK. If the capacity is not available at the right UK airport they will go elsewhere in the world. The UK's future as a global aviation hub demands that a clear decision be taken. We keenly await the publication of a robust final report.
