There is simply no denying that the late March announcement by Delta Air Lines to axe 25% of its flights from its Memphis International Airport hub was a major blow for the Tennessee gateway. Delta is by far the biggest passenger carrier in Memphis - its mainline and regional flights account for 85% of the total throughput - and the decision has led to loss of some 50 daily departures. As a result, Memphis is likely to see about 800,000 passengers a year cut from its annual total, which fell to 9.7 million in 2010 from 9.9 million in 2009.
