During the years precedingthe coronavirus pandemic,Australian airports hadbeen enjoying unparalleledgrowth. From 2008-2019,international passengertraffic increased at an average rate of 6%each year. In response, airport operatorsspent much of the past decade adjustingto a rapidly expanding aviation landscape,fuelled by high demand and primarilydriven by growth in China and India.Facilities across the nation have investedhuge sums to expand and strengthenairport and aviation infrastructure.James Goodwin is the newly appointedCEO of the Australian AirportsAssociation (AAA). He explained toAirports International that to help thecountry’s gateways handle the anticipatedboost in passenger numbers, significantprojects were commissioned to ensurethat facilities remained fit for purposeand able to cope: “Airports upgradedrunways and airfields to maintaingovernment regulatory compliance.They expanded and improved terminalsto ensure adequate security screeninginfrastructure was in place and that retailand dining precincts were world-class.”
