Once upon a time, there was no rhyme or reason to the naming of new aircraft. We began with the sheer functionality of the machine reflected in the prose of its era - Wright Flyer, or Curtiss Pusher for instance. Aircraft with names like the Fokker Tri-plane, Neuiport, SPAD, and Camel distinguished themselves during "The War to End All Wars", except that the conflict itself didn't live up to its own name. By the time of the Second World War, aircraft names designed to strike fear into the hearts of the enemy were conjured up by American manufacturers in the heightened spirit of patriotism and national pride, with impressive new aircraft such as the Thunderbolt, Black Widow, Airacobra, or even Flying Fortress.
