摘要

Just a few minutes after takeoff from San Juan's Isla Verde Airport the No. 3 engine failed aboard Flight 526A - a Douglas DC-4 named Clipper Endeavor. Following proper procedures, the crew quickly feathered the prop, but by now the aircraft had descended to an altitude of only 350 feet. Captain John C. Burn pulled up and gained an additional 200 ft. before the emergency abruptly worsened as engine No. 4 began to run rough. With the airport more than eleven miles away and complete failure of both engines on one wing imminent, Burn gritted his teeth. He did not believe he could make the runway, and if he failed in that attempt the plane would come down in a shoreline area quilted with coral reefs or worse, over the bustling suburbs of San Juan.
